How to Pick the Perfect Photography Location
When it comes to photography, the location can make or break a shoot. Whether it’s for family pictures, senior portraits, or an engagement session, the right spot adds so much to the overall vibe. Here are some easy tips for picking great locations that your clients (and your camera) will love.
Scout the Area
It’s always a good idea to check out locations beforehand. Walk around, see how the light hits at different times of day, and keep an eye out for cool features like big trees, colorful walls, or cute little nooks. Bonus points if you can time your visit for golden hour—it’s when everything just glows. I also tend to find shadier areas to ensure the lighting isn’t too harsh, especially if the shoot happens earlier in the day.
Match the Client’s Style
Ask your clients what kind of vibe they’re going for. Are they into a cozy nature look with fields and trees? Or maybe something trendy, like downtown spots with murals or brick walls? Once you know their style, it’s easier to narrow down options.
Don’t Overthink It
Simple locations can be stunning. A quiet field, a shaded trail, or even a plain wall can make your subject pop. Sometimes, the less going on in the background, the more your client stands out.
Find Hidden Gems
Some of my favorite locations are totally random. Parks, coffee shops, alleyways, or even parking garages can be amazing if you’re paying attention to light and angles. The coolest spots aren’t always the obvious ones!
Be Prepared
Make sure your gear is ready for the location. A wide lens is great for open spaces, and a prime lens works wonders for creating that dreamy background blur. And always bring backups—you never know when something might change last minute.
Respect the Space
This one’s important—leave the location how you found it. Don’t mess with nature or trespass, and if you’re shooting somewhere public, be mindful of other people.
Wrap-Up
Finding the right location doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and creativity, you can turn almost any spot into the perfect backdrop. Got a favorite place to shoot? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
